The Need for Discipleship in the Community of Christ

The church today does not suffer from a lack of activity. Services, programs, and events abound, yet many believers remain spiritually weak because they have never been discipled. Christ’s command is unmistakable: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations” (Matthew 28:19, NASB). Notice He did not say, “Go and make converts.” Conversion is the beginning, but discipleship is the goal.

A disciple (mathētēs) is more than a student; he is a follower and imitator. Paul could say, “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). That is the heartbeat of discipleship—lives being shaped together into the likeness of Jesus. This work cannot be outsourced to programs or pastors. Parents must disciple children. Older believers must guide younger ones. Brothers and sisters must encourage and correct each other in love.

True discipleship is costly. It demands time, intentionality, and sacrifice. It means opening our lives, walking with others through struggles, and continually pointing one another to Christ. Yet the fruit is eternal. When discipleship flourishes, marriages are strengthened, families are anchored in truth, and churches become communities of maturity and love.

The witness of the church is tied to discipleship. Jesus declared, “By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). Shallow faith produces weak testimony. But when the church embraces discipleship, it displays the beauty of Christ to a watching world.
